Does 'What's Your Number?' Stink as Bad as a Certain Human Male Appendage? (And 24 Other Urgent Questions)

Anna Faris (who is great) stars in a new movie called 'What's Your Number?' (which is the opposite of great). In a world that we -- as humans -- like to pretend makes sense, often we are forced to face paradoxes such as this one. But we will. Together. You and me. Right now. So, with that, here's an answer to every question that you could possibly have about a terrible movie called 'What's Your Number?' Q: How does 'What's Your Number?' start? A: Did you see 'Bridesmaids'? Q: Yes. A: It starts like that. Q: With Kristen Wiig sneaking out of bed to put on makeup first thing in the morning in order to impress Jon Hamm? A: Replace the name "Kristen Wiig" with "Anna Faris" and the name "Jon Hamm" with "Zachary Quinto." Q: Is 'What's Your Number?' the kind of movie in which the lead male character inexplicably has access to his city's professional sports team's arena? A: Yes. Q: Have you ever been more befuddled by the plot of a movie more than 'What's Your Number?' A: Maybe by 'Mulholland Drive.' Maybe. Q: So 'What's Your Number?' is equally as confusing as 'Mulholland Drive'? A: For different reasons, yes. Honestly, I can't think of another movie where the central plot made less sense than in 'What's Your Number.' From the aspect of, "No human being who doesn't need to be institutionalized would ever do the things that Anna Farris does in this movie." Q: What makes so little sense about 'What's Your Number?' A: Anna Farris plays Ally, a woman who, after reading a magazine article that claims the average woman sleeps with 10 partners in her lifetime, stresses out about her number, which is 20. So her plan consists of tracking down her ex-lovers in order to make one of them her husband so that her number does not go up any higher. Q: Wait, what? A: Because the article mentions that women whose number goes over 20 are very unlikely to marry. Q: This is the plot for an entire movie? In theaters? A: Also, in the second scene of the movie, she gets fired. Which has nothing to do with the rest of the movie other than it maybe prevents an audience member from thinking, "Hey, when does this person work?" Q: What's the furthest Ally travels in order to find one of her exes? A: Ally lives in Boston. She flies to Miami just for the sake of getting a pap smear from one of her exes (played by Thomas Lennon). Also, I should point out, this is a person who is recently unemployed. Q: When you have been unemployed, you never traveled cross-country? A: When I've been unemployed, I'm hesitant to travel cross-town because in NY City that would cost $2.25. Q: Chris Evans is in this movie. What does he do? A: Chris Evans plays Colin, a guy who is obviously so not right for Ally. I mean, he's so not right! So, so not right! PLEASE, 'What's Your Number?,' TELL ME ONCE AGAIN HOW F-CKING NOT RIGHT COLIN IS FOR ALLY -- BECAUSE I DIDN'T QUITE CATCH THAT THE FIRST 35 TIMES! Q: So Colin turns out to be right for Ally after all? A: F-ck off. Q: What is Colin's purpose in 'What's Your Number?,' other than to be not right for Ally? A: Colin plays Ally's neighbor who, like Ally, has sex with a lot of other human beings. Colin also casually mentions that his father is a police officer, so he knows how to track people down. This will come in handy for Ally later in this movie! Q: So, while tracking down Ally's exes, does Collin start to fall for Ally? A: Seriously, f-ck off. Q: On a scale of one to ten, how much does Chris Evans not want to be in this movie judging from his onscreen body language alone? A: Nine. Q: How many scenes are there in 'What's Your Number?' of Chris Evans looking sad as he silently stares at the Boston skyline? A: Three. Q: How did the director of 'What's Your Number' motivate Chris Evans into looking so sad? A: Probably by saying, "Chris, think about the day that you signed on to be in 'What's Your Number?' Q: What's the best thing about 'What's Your Number?' A: As alluded to earlier: Anna Faris is great. Which is interesting because this may be the worst movie that I've ever seen that features a great performance by a lead actor who is in pretty much every scene. Q: What is the most poignant line spoken in 'What's Your Number?' A: When Ally, doing yet another action that no human would ever do, states, "This is bullsh-t," then admits that what's she's doing is stupid. As if the writers of the film had a catharsis by saying, "You know, if we have Ally admit that what she's doing makes no f-cking sense, perhaps the audience will go along with it." Q: What's the most awkward scene that you've ever watched in a movie in which a character sings? A: That would be Chris Evans singing 'Just What I Needed' by The Cars in 'What's Your Number?' Q: Like 'Bridesmaids,' does 'What's Your Number' prove that females can headline an R-rated raunchy comedy? A: If anything, 'What's Your Number?' proves that nobody should be headlining an R-rated raunchy comedy. Q: What thing were you least expecting to see, but you did see, during 'What's Your Number?' A: Joel McHale's taint. Q: Joel McHale is in 'What's Your Number?' A: McHale plays Ally's aforementioned former boss. A boss whose recurring gag is to reach into his pants to see if his hand, during the course of 'What's Your Number?,' smells like scrotum. Q: If you're going to be blurbed in the commercials this weekend for 'What's Your Number?' what quote do you hope to God is used? A: "'What's Your Number?' smells like scrotum!" Parks and Rec's Nick Offerman on Ron Swanson's Moustache Misadventures and Scary Tammy

Nick Offerman When viewers last saw Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation, he was eyebrow-less and running scared from first wife Tammy 1. Nick Offerman promises that in the beginning of Season 4 (Thursday, 8:30/7:30, NBC) "fans will go through a roller-coaster ride of emotion with Ron's facial hair." No, really. Just wait. TVGuide.com quizzed Offerman about the state of his popular 'stache, what he thinks of the Ron Swanson phenomenon, and why Tammy 1 was once attractive to a young Ron. Plus, he tells us whether we'll see more of his woodworking skills or his smooth alter ego Duke Silver. Many TV critics considered your lack of an Emmy nomination a major snub. Still, the show was up for Best Comedy Series, which had to feel good. There was also Amy Poehler's impassioned remark about your being left out.Offerman: Megan and I were driving from Austin to Los Angeles when I heard what Amy said, and I thought, "That's why I would follow her into the gates of hell." I really, really was hoping that the show would get that kind of recognition because, of course, we all think that it's the smartest comedy that ever existed. I think Megan and I had celebratory huevos rancheros somewhere in New Mexico. I got extra chorizo on mine. Ron Swanson has become something of an Internet superstar. There's Cats Who Look Like Ron Swanson. Eater made his burger with a turkey leg in it. His face has been used to hawk bacon at Trader Joe's. Many animated GIFs... Offerman: My being cast as Ron Swanson, the most prevalent effect of that is that my mother is much more savvy at Google alerts. Megan and I are very low-tech. We're kind of Luddites.Amy Poehler on the evolution of Parks and Recreation's lovable leaderYou don't ever indulge? You have to have a favorite fan-made Ron Swanson creation.Offerman: My best friend is a really funny, weird artist and he comes to my woodshop a lot. If I'm going to indulge in some sort of Ron Swanson item, it's usually witting with him in the furniture shop. I think a lot of my favorite stuff has been the really crazy portraits of Ron. To me, those are by far the coolest because someone takes the savory flavor of Ron and turns it into a whole other work of art. My face selling bacon didn't feel bad, either. It's not often we see Ron melt, but he melted at the sight of Li'l Sebastian. Explain their connection.Offerman: Well, Li'l Sebastian was a heroic figure to Ron. He was a simple little horse, and he sort of lived Ron's ideal life. Ron would like to just be adored, be incredibly well-hung and have his fill every day of both oats and lady horses. What can you tell us about the story arc for Ron's facial hair this season?Offerman: Gosh, I can't remember. I either had a really bad dream where Ron's facial hair goes through some trauma, or yeah, Ron's moustache might run afoul in one way or another. I'm not privy to a lot of that information. My facial hair has a different agent. I work, like, one day every three days that my moustache works.Parks and Recreation scoop: Ron's facial hair, Tammy 1, Leslie's big decision and more!Last season, we learned that both Ron and Tammy 2 are terrified of Tammy 1. How did they get together in the first place?Offerman: Without giving away any spoilers, I think it would be safe to say that they were in an older lady-younger fellow situation. And you'd have to be a eunuch to resist the temptations of the older woman, especially when portrayed by Patricia Clarkson. We're actually friends with Patty and the night the deal was made, Megan and I had a drink with her to celebrate. Sitting there, looking at the two of them was so surreal. I still feel like a bit of a freshman. I feel like I've just arrived at my first job, so to be sitting with these two beauties and playing a man who's been married to both of them really sent me for a loop. One of the moving moments last season was Ron's birthday, when Leslie reveals that it was on Ron's advice that she stayed in Pawnee. Why do you think Ron is so supportive of Leslie?Offerman: Working side by side with someone whose energy is as infectious as Leslie Knope ... let's just say, if Ron had seen it coming, he would have moved to a different part of the state. Even though he doesn't believe in the actual ideals she's pursuing, he has to respect someone who simply has ideals and pursues them so ardently. Are we going to see any more of Ron's woodshop handiwork?Offerman: We are, in fact. I know of at least two episodes where we'll be treated to more of the wizardry of Ron's woodworking. Why Ron Swanson's birthday turned super sweet on Parks and RecreationAnd what about Duke Silver?Offerman: It's funny. People ask about it a lot. I know we love Duke Silver, but it just all depends on what is going to be serving the particular story week in and week out. I think we will see Duke again, but only time will tell. What's it been like on set? There was a lot of frustration last year when the show was shelved for midseason.Offerman: Really, for the first time since the show was created, we're comfortable. I hate to even say it - knock on wood - but it seems like we get to at least have one comfortable season without having to be on the bubble or feel like we're going to be taken away at any moment. But even when we were frustrated, making shows in a vacuum, as long as we're making the show, everyone's really happy because it's so much fun. What are you most looking forward to seeing this season of Parks and Recreation? How scary do you think Tammy 1 can possibly be?

Head of Russia's Oscar Committee Calls for Giant Bomb/Official Selection to Withdraw on Account of It Sucks

You think the Oscars selection process gets political here? Just imagine sitting in the room when Russia’s national Oscar committee grudgingly voted for Nikita Mikalhkov’s enormous critical and commercial bomb, Burnt by the Sun 2: Citadel (Utomlyonnye solntsem 2: Predstoyanie), to become the country’s official foreign language selection. Filmmaker and committee head Vladimir Menshov so strongly opposed the pick of the $45 million flop that he’s now lobbying publicly for the film’s director to pull out of the race. Burnt by the Sun 2: Citadel is an expensive period war sequel to 1994’s Burnt by the Sun, a 1930s-set Stalinist Russia drama that won Mikalhkov the foreign language Oscar. The sequel picks up during World War II, but critics panned it for various offenses including bad acting, illogical retconning, and an inane script. With a production budget of $45 million, Burnt by the Sun 2: Citadel only made $8.2 million back at the foreign box office when it opened in the spring of 2010. (A third Burnt by the Sun is reportedly in the works.) “Even if we ignore the fact that audiences and critics hated the film, Citadel is part of a series,” Menshov said in the Moskovskiye Novosti daily, via The Hollywood Reporter. “How can anyone who is out of the context make any sense of it?” Mikalhkov has yet to oblige Menshov and withdraw from the Oscar race, but would you? Besides, terrible films wind up with Oscar nominations and wins every year. Granted, they’re usually in technical categories (Norbit, Heaven’s Gate - looking at you), not in major categories. And it’s not like Burnt by the Sun 2 has gotten past the official selection stage to the shortlist or an actual nomination, which is really unlikely now. But Menshov taking a stand against bad movies sets a noble example, and a good question; should a filmmaker decline a shot at an Oscar nod just because most everyone in the world hated their movie? And which bad Oscar nominees from the past deserve to have been pre-emptively taken out of the race on account of bad reviews and terrible returns? While you mull it over, take a gander at the trailer for Burnt by the Sun 2: Citadel. (It’s in Russian, but you get the picture.) Controversy Erupts Over Russia’s Oscar Entry [THR]

AFM Staying In Santa Monica For Now, But It Doesnt Seem Happy About It

The Independent Film & Television Alliance, which puts on the American Film Market, put out an odd statement today reluctantly confirming that the annual film-sales confab will remain based at the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel — at least for 2011 and 2012. The statement, which won’t be one they’ll save down at the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce, comes after word leaked our recently that the IFTA was talking with the Anschutz Entertainment Group about moving the convention to AEG’s L.A. Live complex in downtown Los Angeles. The IFTA said there is no deal yet and it is continuing discussions with Loews, but then it goes on to give a laundry list of reasons why L.A. Live is the better place for the event, saying relocating would provide: Lower costs for Sellers and Buyers. Exhibition costs would drop for sales companies and hotel costs would be lower for everyone. Better showcase opportunities for films. Regal Cinemas has an 800 stadium-seat premiere screen and the Nokia Theatre can accommodate premieres for 7,000. Increased business efficiency. All theatres and screening rooms would be located within a five-minute walk from the market. Additionally, by 2014, there will be more hotel rooms in the L.A. LIVE district than there are within miles of the Loews. More dining, sports and major entertainment options for travelers from around the world. From concerts and sporting events to fine dining and exciting nightlife, the L.A. LIVE district and surrounding area offers more than any other market venue. The L.A. LIVE district will allow us to grow all segments of the AFM market, conferences and the celebration of film and make the AFM more inclusive for the entire motion picture industry. One can’t help but think this won’t do wonders at the IFTA-Loews negotiating table. Regardless, the confab remains scheduled for Nov. 2-9 — in Santa Monica.
